The WEFE NEXUS International Conference – Exploring and Bridging Nexus for a Sustainable Future- will take place on 11-12 February 2025 at the Institut Agronomique et Vétérinaire Hassan II in Rabat, Morocco.

Organised by the BONEX and SureNexus projects, both funded by PRIMA, the event will gather researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and practitioners from around the world to address the growing challenges and opportunities of the Water-Energy-Food-Environment (WEFE) Nexus.

In today’s interconnected world, the critical interdependence between water, energy, food, and the environment is more apparent than ever. Key organisations such as the European Commission, PRIMA, the United Nations, UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme, and the Union for the Mediterranean have recognised this through strategic frameworks that emphasise the WEFE Nexus. However, the gap between these high-level objectives and their real-world application remains significant. Few practical examples successfully translate these strategies into on-the-ground solutions.

Against this backdrop, the WEFE Nexus International Conference will tackle these implementation challenges head-on. The event will explore innovative approaches to close this gap, transforming the Nexus from a theoretical concept into a practical tool for sustainable development. By fostering transdisciplinary discussions, sharing practical experiences, and promoting collaboration, the conference will aim to identify concrete solutions that engage diverse stakeholders -including gender-focused strategies, governance frameworks, and disruptive technologies. Ultimately, the goal is to create environments where the WEFE Nexus can be fully leveraged for sustainable progress.

The conference will be structured around three key pillars:

  1. WEFE Nexus in Governance: Focusing on policy frameworks and institutional arrangements to ensure effective governance of WEFE resources.
  2. Gender and WEFE Nexus: Exploring the critical gender dimensions in WEFE resource management and promoting women’s empowerment.
  3. WEFE Nexus Solutions: Showcasing innovative and ancestral resource management practices that contribute to sustainable development, with discussions on the challenges and opportunities for adoption.
