Water in a heated world
Thursday 12 December 2024
13:00–14:00 UTC | 08:00–09:00 EST | 18:30–19:30 IST

This webinar will explore the critical interplay between climate change and water resources. With rising global temperatures, the hydrological cycle is accelerating, increasingly threatening the availability and quality of freshwater. In 2023, many regions globally experienced severe water scarcity due to prolonged droughts and shifting patterns of precipitation, while others had to contend with devastating floods that destroyed homes and livelihoods. We can no longer rely on the weather patterns of the past; we have to rethink how we manage water.

This webinar will look at the impacts of climate change on water cycles, examining shifts in precipitation patterns, increased evaporation, and the rising frequency of extreme events. It will discuss why nexus approaches are central to technical and policy approaches for climate resilience and adaptation. Additionally, it will provide an overview of key discussions on water and outcomes from the recently concluded UNFCCC COP29 and an overview of important water research for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
